Former President Donald Trump has warned that America’s ammunition stocks are depleted, blaming incumbent President Joe Biden for the national security issue.
During an Aug. 21 campaign rally in Asheboro, North Carolina, Trump claimed Biden bled America’s ammunition stockpiles dry to arm Ukraine and other countries. He added that aside from ammunition, billions of dollars worth of weaponry have been donated free of charge.
“They released a report talking about all of the vulnerable areas. We’re weak here, we’re weak there,” Trump addressed the crowd behind bulletproof glass panels. “That’s like saying, ‘We have no ammunition.’ You know why? We gave it all up to Ukraine and various other places. We gave them everything.”
According to an Aug. 23 fact sheet from the U.S. Department of State, Washington “is providing Ukraine vital military assistance to defend itself” through the so-called presidential drawdown authority (PDA). It added that the Biden administration has made use of the PDA 49 times to provide Kyiv with military aid since August 2022.
“The use of the PDA … allows for the speedy deliveries of defense articles and services from [U.S.] Department of Defense stocks to foreign countries and international organizations to respond to unforeseen emergencies,” the fact sheet continued.
The former president has pledged to turn the tide and make a “historic investment in rebuilding” the American military if necessary. Aside from this, Trump also promised to put an end to the conflict that America’s munitions are allocated to. Russia Today reported that during a July phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Trump reiterated his promise to bring a swift conclusion to the Russia-Ukraine war if elected in November. In June, the real estate mogul also stressed that he would stop donating tens of billions of dollars to Ukraine.
The Russian state-owned news outlet reported that the U.S. Congressional Commission on the National Defense Strategy (NDS Commission) released an assessment in late July. The NDS Commission’s 312-page report warned that the U.S. military “lacks both the capabilities and the capacity required to be confident it can deter and prevail in combat.”
According to the report, in a hypothetical future conflict with China, the latter would likely be aided, at least economically and possibly also militarily, by the likes of Russia, Iran or North Korea. This would make the odds of a U.S. victory increasingly slim, military experts predicted.
“Unclassified public war games suggest that, in a conflict with China, the United States would largely exhaust its munitions inventories in as few as three to four weeks, with some important munitions (e.g. anti-ship missiles) lasting only a few days,” the document concluded.
Military experts on the commission say that because of the serious inadequacies in America’s defense industry at present, more investments are needed to remedy the situation.
