A clandestine network of “very connected” Democrats is growing and are reportedly scheming to figure out how to make President Joe Biden withdraw from the presidential race – “the sooner, the better.” Most of the individuals in this network are veterans of the former administrations of Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.
According to the news outlet Axios, the unofficial “Committee to Unelect the President” has been commissioning polls, lobbying former presidents, back-channeling Democratic leaders, organizing donors and taking the fight to Biden in a very public way. In fact, top Democratic National Committee benefactors, who requested anonymity, are on “donor strike” and are moving away from the president to transfer into House and Senate campaigns as a hedge against a victory by former President Donald Trump.
Meanwhile, reports said that members of the secret group insist it has no actual leadership or benefactor behind it, describing it instead as a “network” of like-minded individuals. “No one is more than one person away from everyone else,” an unnamed member of the group described as a “central player” said.
Obama and Clinton also reportedly support the group by staying silent following Biden’s disastrous debate against Trump last month.
“Silence is a very loud form of speech. No one is saying ‘come hell or high water,'” said James Carville, a veteran political assistant and Clinton’s campaign key person.
The anti-Biden Democrats are trading texts, emails and polling, fighting fellow Democrats on TV and social media platforms, and circulating stories and arguments by sympathetic journalists and columnists, including Vox editor-at-large Ezra Klein and columnist Matt Yglesias, Axios reported.
Some members of the “committee” are even convincing lawmakers to push their leaders to squeeze Biden and his inner circle. They know Biden and his family seem unmovable so they hope for the use of overwhelming force by the former presidents, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.
“President Biden is a historic figure and a lot of that is gonna be tainted if he persists and loses this race,” Axelrod told Axios. “The people around him have a collective hundreds of years of campaign experience. They know how to interpret data. They know how to read the moment. It’s just a question of whether their affection for him clouds that.”
Moreover, according to a recent CNN report, Obama has spoken privately with Pelosi over their “concerns” about Biden’s viability and how much harder they think it has become for the president to beat Trump. Neither is quite sure what to do. Pelosi has spoken to Biden since the debate, but in the time since, she has made clear that she does not see Biden’s decision not to give up on the presidential bid as final. But she, through an aide, declined to comment further.
The news outlet named former Obama aides such as David Axelrod, former Clinton advisers like Carville, elected and swing-seat Democrats, donor class including actor George Clooney, late-night liberals such as Stephen Colbert and some mainstream media columnists, as part of the burgeoning “oust Biden” network.
Sixty-seven percent of Americans, including a majority of Biden’s supporters, who responded to the new ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll, believe that the president should step aside as his party’s presumptive nominee. Moreover, 85 percent now say he is too old for a second term, a new high, up from an already-broad 81 percent in April and 68 percent just more than a year ago.
Americans are divided 46 to 47 percent between the two top candidates if the election were held today. The result is not far from the 44-46 percent ABC/Ipsos poll result in April. Among registered voters, it’s an absolute tie at 46-46 percent. (Related: Trump maintains substantial lead against Biden in six swing states that could decide the election.)
When it comes to their opinion if Biden should withdraw, 44 percent of Americans overall say they’d be satisfied with Harris as the Democratic nominee, with 53 percent dissatisfied. Among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents, however, satisfaction with Harris reaches 70 percent and 76 percent among current Biden supporters.
In an open-ended question, Democrats were asked whom they’d like to see take Biden’s place if he withdrew. Twenty-nine percent named Harris and more than 30 potential candidates were named.
Biden also suffered more reputational harm following the catastrophic CNN debate as half of Americans say it left them with a less favorable opinion of him, while only 22 percent say the same about Trump’s performance. Twenty-seven percent see Trump more favorably because of the debate, versus just seven percent for Biden.
Further, the poll, produced for ABC by Langer Research Associates with fieldwork by Ipsos, finds Trump leading Biden by 30 percentage points at 44 percent to 14 percent, in terms of cognitive sharpness to serve effectively as president.
Meanwhile, Biden’s job approval rating is stable but at a weak 36 percent.
