President Joe Biden’s disastrous performance during his debate with former President Donald Trump was a result of “overpreparation,” according to his campaign team.
A person close to the president disclosed this to Axios, telling the outlet: “He was over-prepared and relying on minutiae when all that mattered was vigor and energy. They prepared him for the wrong debate. He was over-prepared when what he needed was rest.
The first presidential debate, which was hosted by CNN and held in Atlanta, has overwhelmingly been described as a low point in Biden’s bid for a second term. Observers noted how the 81-year-old president sounded hoarse, lost his train of thought several times and struggled to get his points across. He failed to refute Trump’s claims during the 90-minute debate, including actually winning the 2020 elections.
One person who appealed in vain to Biden’s top aid in the days before the debate recounted: “My only request was to make sure he’s rested before the debate, but he was exhausted. He was unwell. What a bad decision to send him out looking sick and exhausted.”
But other analysts, including Florida-based attorney John Morgan, blamed Biden’s campaign team. “I believe that he was over-coached [and] over-practiced,” he told Reuters.
According to Morgan, Biden’s senior aide Anita Dunn put the president “in a venue that was conducive for Trump and not for him.” The attorney who is also a major Biden fundraiser thus remarked that Dunn and her husband Bob Bauer should “be fired forever and never let back anywhere near the campaign.” Bauer, a former White House counsel during the Obama administration, played the role of Trump in pre-debate rehearsals.
A senior Democratic adviser told POLITICO that “no one expected this nosedive,” adding that “there was no bright spot” for Biden in the debate. They also zoomed in on the president’s weaknesses – “bad on message, bad on substance, bad on counter punching, bad on presentation, bad on non-verbals.”
An adviser to Democratic donors also told the outlet: “Our only hope is that he bows out, we have a brokered convention, or dies. Otherwise, we are f**king dead.”
Other Democrats have called for Biden to end his quest for a second term, with some even openly discussing that he should step aside for a younger candidate. Some of the names being floated include Vice President Kamala Harris, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg. (Related: Biden’s catastrophic performance in the debate raises more questions about his fitness for office.)
Even those who watched the poll found that Biden wasn’t up to par to Trump during the debate. According to a CNN flash poll after the debate, 67 percent of registered voters who watched the contest felt that Trump had outperformed Biden. Debate watchers preferred Trump over Biden on the economy, with 56 percent saying they think Trump would better handle it versus 44 percent who say Biden would.
Despite the blunder, Biden’s team has indicated that the president does not plan to drop out of the race, with one campaign official telling POLITICO that he is “the only person who has ever beaten Trump” and he will “do it again.”
