Israel purportedly used bombs manufactured and supplied by the U.S. to attack a tent city for displaced Palestinians in Rafah, according to a report.
The May 26 attack saw the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) burning sleeping families to death and decapitating a small child. At least 45 were killed and more than 240 were wounded in the attack on the Kuwaiti Al-Salam Camp 1 (Kuwait Peace Camp 1), according to the Gazan Health Ministry. The camp was built in early January.
In a report by the New York Times, munition debris at the strike location included remnants of a GBU-39 bomb, designed and manufactured in the United States. U.S. officials have been advocating for Israel to use more of these bombs, which they claim can reduce civilian casualties.
Trevor Ball, a former U.S. Army explosive ordnance disposal technician, identified the weapon by its unique bolt pattern and the slot for the folding fins. He also observed that the tail actuation system, which controls the fins guiding the GBU-39 to its target, was a dead giveaway to the kind of munition used. Footage of the munition fragments recorded by Palestinian journalist Alam Sadeq also bore numbers “81873,” the unique identifier code assigned by the U.S. government to Woodward, an aerospace manufacturer based in Colorado that supplies parts for bombs including the GBU-39.
Explosive weapons expert and former British Army artillery officer Chris Cobb-Smith explained that the GBU-39, manufactured by Boeing, is a high-precision munition designed to attack strategically important targets while causing low collateral damage. But he noted that using any munition in a densely populated area always carries significant risks.
The attack on the Rafah tent city came weeks after U.S. President Joe Biden said he paused arms shipments to Tel Aviv due to the IDF’s offensive on the southern Gazan city, according to the Turkish Anadolu Ajansi.
Footage from the fake news network CNN depicted large areas of the camp engulfed in flames, with civilians, including men, women and children, desperately seeking shelter from the nighttime attack. Rescuers were seen retrieving charred bodies, including those of children, from the debris.
The U.S. has traditionally been Israel’s biggest supplier of arms. Biden last month signed a $95 billion foreign aid package approved by Congress, which includes $26 billion for Israel. Of this $26 million, with $9 billion designated for addressing the humanitarian disaster in Gaza caused by the conflict.
The Biden administration notified Congress on May 14 about a new over $1 billion arms package that it plans to deliver to Israel, according to media reports. The package includes $700 million for tank ammunition, $500 million in tactical vehicles and $60 million in mortar rounds.
Before this, the Council on Foreign Relations reported that the U.S. had provided Israel with $300 billion in aid, excluding the $1 trillion war in Iraq and the billions spent to “normalize relations” between Israel and its neighbors.
Retired IDF Maj. Gen. Yitzhak Brick emphasized Israel’s dependence on U.S. military support in an interview with the Jewish News Syndicate in November.
“All of our missiles, the ammunition, the precision-guided bombs, all the airplanes and bombs, it’s all from the U.S.,” he said. “The minute they turn off the tap, you can’t keep fighting. You have no capability. Everyone understands that we can’t fight this war without the U.S. – period.”
