President Joe Biden declared in February that Ukraine has won the war. Five months later, Russian forces still control significant parts of Ukraine – including Luhansk, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia.
Biden made the delusional claim in an interview for PBS‘ “NewsHour,” a day after delivering the State of the Union address. “There’s no way that [Russian President Vladimir] Putin is going to be able to [win] – he’s already lost Ukraine,” Biden said at the time, adding that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is coordinating in support of Ukraine.
During the February interview, the chief executive also pushed back on criticism lobbed by Republican lawmakers who suggested that too much U.S. tax money is going to Kyiv. PBS anchor Judy Woodruff specifically cited Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan, who said money spent in Ukraine should be used for the benefit of Americans. To this, Biden answered with an audible laugh.
“If these guys don’t want to help Ukraine, I get it. They don’t want to do that. But what are they going to do … when Russia rolls across Ukraine, or into Belarus or anywhere else?”
The president also replied in the affirmative if aid to Ukraine is open-ended, echoing his administration’s support of Kyiv “no matter how long it takes.”
The National Pulse‘s Jack Montgomery pointed out: “The backwards declaration of victory may end up being somewhat of a Bush-style ‘Mission Accomplished’ moment for Biden, as the U.S. and NATO continue to be drawn into the conflict with very little to show for it.”
“Biden’s bar for success in war may be fairly low, however. The president previously hailed his Saigon-style withdrawal from Afghanistan – which saw dozens of American soldiers killed or injured by a suicide bomber, and an Afghan aid worker and seven children murdered when he authorized a retaliatory drone strike on the wrong target – as an ‘extraordinary success.'”
According to Montgomery, Biden’s proclamation of a victory for Ukraine that time – weeks before the first anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine war – was too soon. This is because Russian forces continue to occupy around one-fifth of Ukraine’s territory. Moreover, a much-anticipated counter-offensive appears to be more of a Pyrrhic victory with minimal gains and maximal losses.
He reported in June that almost 15 percent of Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) the Biden administration sent to Ukraine had been destroyed, citing open-source intelligence analysts. Netherlands-based warfare research group Oryx put the exact number of destroyed Bradley IFVs at 16. (Related: Nearly 15% of Bradley armored vehicles the US sent to Ukraine now DESTROYED over just 3 days.)
Aside from the Bradley IFVs, several Leopard 2 main battle tanks sent by Germany appear to have been likewise destroyed. Based on news reports, around half of European-made Leopard 2R tanks – specialized for breaching enemy defenses – were also taken out.
“The news comes as [Ukrainian President Volodymyr] Zelensky has officially confirmed his forces have commenced major counter-offensive operations,” wrote Montgomery. However, the number of military vehicles destroyed isn’t proportionate to the size of the territory captured by Ukraine – with only four villages in the Donetsk region being under Kyiv’s control as of writing.”
