Robert F. Kennedy Jr. (RFK Jr.) believes he can beat incumbent President Joe Biden in presidential primaries for the 2024 election.
“Yes, I can win,” the Democratic candidate said when asked about his chances against the former vice president. “The public polls are showing me at 20 percent over for the Democrats, and our private polling is showing that I have very strong support among independents and even Republicans.”
The nephew of former President John F. Kennedy later told Fox News: “We need to be able to show people that democracy works and the U.S. isn’t just like the Soviet Union, where the [ruling] party picks candidates and the public really doesn’t have a say.”
“We should be trying to convince the public that we are the Democratic Party. We do believe in democracy and that the people actually get to choose candidates; get to meet them; see them debate; touch them and participate in their own governance.”
RFK Jr.’s remarks appear to be aimed at the Democratic National Committee (DNC), which earlier insinuated that there will be no primary debates. Some Democrats have voiced concerns that the DNC is overly committed to Biden’s reelection and are protecting him by not planning any debates.
The DNC has not offered any public comments about whether debates will be held. Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee has planned about a dozen presidential primary debates. But former President Donald Trump – the leading candidate for the GOP – has signaled he won’t participate in any of these.
RFK Jr. told Fox News that he joined the 2024 race because he believes the Democratic Party is “on the wrong track” and has now become “the party of war, of censorship [and] of fear.” His uncle John and his father, former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy Sr., were avowed Democrats in their lifetimes.
RFK Jr. and Trump share several similarities despite being on different political parties. Both are hostile to the Deep State and are hated by the mainstream media. Both candidates also espouse anti-establishment positions such as ending wars driven by the military-industrial complex and promoting free speech.
But RFK Jr., the founder and general counsel of health freedom group Children’s Health Defense, quashed rumors of a potential election run with Trump in a May 11 tweet. (Related: RFK Jr. says HE WON’T JOIN TRUMP, ending rumors of a possible tandem in 2024 presidential elections.)
“Just to quell any speculation, under no circumstances will I join Trump on an electoral ticket,” he tweeted. “Our positions on certain fundamental issues, our approaches to governance and our philosophies of leadership could not be further apart.”
The CHD founder’s tweet purportedly came as a response to former White House chief strategist and podcast host Steve Bannon. In April, the “Bannon’s War Room” host said RFK Jr. would be a good running mate for the real estate mogul in case former Arizona gubernatorial candidate and news anchor Kari Lake was unavailable.
“If [Lake is] not available to be Trump’s vice president, [RFK Jr.] would be an excellent choice for Trump to consider,” Bannon said. The erstwhile adviser to the Trump campaign said his suggestion purportedly received a standing ovation during a public appearance.
